The joy of following God
Last night I went to a Worship night in Winnipeg. One of the songs that was sung went something like, “I give you my hands..... I give you my feet....” And as I sang, wondering what that meant, all the sudden I thought of nail pierced hands and feet. I realized that giving myself to God did not mean a lovely joy ride but a crucifixion.
It is not like I have not heard or thought of it before. Rather, I think last night the worship began to be more real than just the camp songs that one sings--Crucifixion is a reality.

Today's Good Friday, and when I saw the photo of Jesus' thorny crown, I stopped to read it. I appreciated the comments. "Take up your cross and follow me." Why haven't we used this passage more on Good Friday? I've been doing daily Bible Studies during Holy Week at our church here in a Costa Rican slum, and we've been covering the Last Supper, Gethsemane, and Jesus before Pilate. Not that these are wrong, but, as noted in "The Joy of Following God," what an appropriate reminder that the cross is something each one of us is called to bear. Why? Because our Master bore His, and the disciple is not greater than his Teacher. Next year, maybe I'll back up a little in the Gospels and look at Jesus' own teachings regarding the cross he had yet to bear.
Hey Steve,
Thanks for your thoughts. I have not looked to see if there were any comments recently, and I did not know you knew of my blog!
I think the cross is a reality that must be emphasized, and would agree with you that there is a lack of necessary emphasis. I think though you could elaborate more on what you mean by
"Because our Master bore His, and the disciple is not greater than his Teacher"
What do you mean? I find it too vague, but maybe that is me... :)
